BEWARE THE MOON REVIEWS
I had a thing about this movie, a bad thing, before I had even watched it to be fair. My name is Megan, so in a way I was like, 'If I watch this, is it going to be bad luck, or is something else just as bad going happen!'. A wee bit silly, but that is how I felt when I saw my name in this very negative movie title.. But I picked up my little balls, grew them a bit and watched it - and I really shouldn't have even bothered... 'Two teenage girls encounter an Internet child predator.'
If you Google this film, you will see a fair few reviews on how it is insanely 'unsettling' and how it is 'a film you wouldn't want to watch again', well, I would agree with the second one, it's an awful film. A dreadful film.
It's not a nice story at all, by it's so bad it's almost comical, the acting is awful, the way the film is put together is awful, and just all over it's just bad. There is not one part of it where you'd go, "well that part wasn't that bad", nah, all of it is on that same shite level. With most things, I try to find at least some good things, like a shit sandwich, this is all a shit sandwich, I don't have anything good to say... Makes me so sad, but this was awful, literally one of the worst films I have ever sat and watched. Probably stood and watched too, saying that.
The characters are down right annoying and are so very cliche, the 'slutty' girl being best friends with the 'good' girl, both just being cliche through the whole thing and filming everything - which is also not done well. The girls film everything, everything, and on old Motorola phones, the flip up ones, ones that aren't known for good pictures.. Yet, this film is filmed in very good picture, nice and crisp and clear. And I also am not sure in a way why or how they filmed everything for the film, the beginning opens by saying that all the clips and footage are put together from films and files, yet, for one, how do you even save videos off video calls, especially when this film was made? Or am I being stupid? My main point here, is this movie sucked. Sucked.
The movie sucked, but the story is not nice, at all, like two girls go missing, there is some violence, some rape and it's not nice, at all. Like, on paper, it's a ballsy and hard hitting film, but in film, nah. It's just bad, like, I would not watch this film unless I was paid. Like, I don't want to see it again unless I have a good reason to.. Not just that Megan was missing, but this film should go missing, forever, from eyes...
I also hope this does not show the youth of today... Please, no.
Well, I kind of had high hopes for this, kind of. I say kind of because it had a fairly good cast, the main cast were all fairly well known and it had James Marsden in it - I love him... But the fact I had never heard of this film, being with the cast as well, worried me - and I was right to be worried. 'Two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home in the Alaskan wild. They set out on a two-day hike and are stalked by an unrelenting grizzly bear.' It is not a very good film...at all.
With this film I did something I never do....I actually stopped it before the end and deleted it. I was that bored and that lost with it, and that unlikely to finish it I stopped it and got rid of it. Shocking, I know. I just couldn't get into it, like I tried, I really started watching it, but soon I found myself looking on my phone or on my laptop, or knitting. I don't knit, FYI, but if I did, I would have during this film... It's just boring, and you don't really connect with the characters, none of them really stand out - I feel bad again, because I do really like James Marsden...
I feel bad because I like James Marsden, and I like Thomas Jane in The Mist and I hate not finishing horror films, but I just couldn't finish this one. I hovered the remote selector over the film numerous times to restart watching it again, but nope, could not bring myself to do it...
I should have seen the signs before starting this film to be fair, the bear in the movie, Bart, gets top billing on IMDB andddddddd, the lady introducing the movie, only really mentioned how Bart got top billing... This was a massive sign of a bad film, and one I even mentioned to my dad but didn't take myself. Silly me.
Yeah, don't do this film... Watch The Mist or X Men instead... Or even Hairspray, because the new one is a damn good film. And I love films about animals too...
I accidentally watched two Idris Elba films over one weekend, I say accidentally because the first one I knew he was in, the second I did not. The second was One Good Deed, this was the first one and the actually, much better one. 'A successful asset manager, who has just received a huge promotion, is blissfully happy in his career and in his marriage. But when a temp worker starts stalking him, all the things he's worked so hard for are placed in jeopardy.' This film is actually quite good, I was surprised if I am honest. And before you say, I know this isn't technically a horror film, but I am on a roll and this was one of the last films I watched... and Idris Elba, so...
Obsessed is a good film, the cast is promising to look at first off, the story is good and it keeps you guessing as you watch it. My dad caught some of it and even he was into it at some points and was surprised at where the story went. He didn't even see it coming at one point. You watch this expecting some type of Fatal Attraction affair, but nope, it's the opposite and just a very very crazy lady. Bravo, that makes for some entertaining viewing.
As I mentioned before, the cast is pretty on point, Idris Elba is married to Beyonce and Ali Larter is the obsessed bit on the side, can't really go wrong. The only thing I have to say, and it's not a bad thing at all, is everytime Beyonce spoke, I had flashbacks to Austin Powers: Goldmember. Anyone else think of her still as Foxy Cleopatra? Anyone else remember that brilliant film that was Goldmember? Wasn't that class? I fancy watching that now.. damn. That was such a good movie... Obsessed is not as good as that film, but still good.
Obsessed is not that bad a film in anyway, the cast is good, the story is good, only bad thing is the ending. The ending was not good. It's just an ending, it just sort of ends, kind of like the people making it just needed an ending and had no other ideas than giving it the most cliche and boring ending ever. But hey, unlike some, the ending doesn't ruin the film, the film holds up and is actually an entertaining watch. Why am I not married to Idris Elba though?
Okay, so technically this is a crime/thriller, and not really a horror, but it has some horror elements, such as storms, violence and a scary villain, and Idris Elba, so I am allowing it. 'An unstable escaped convict terrorizes a woman who is alone with her two children.' I am also allowing it because I have only just watched it so it is clear in my mind, unlike anything else in my mind.
One Good Deed is okay, it's a film I chose to have in the background and for the whole film, apart from the end, you could pretty much have it on in the background -it's that easy to follow. She lets the handsome stranger in, very handsome at that, and bam, he turns out to be evil, which, as an audience member, you already knew.
I don't want to make this whole review into an Idris Elba Appreciation review, but I can't help it, I have to get it out... He's very very handsome, and I have heard a lovely man in person. In this, he is still very very handsome, and he wears those lovely man shirts that are long sleeved and cling to the arms and chest, just lovely, really. And he came in from the rain, and started as a very nice man, quite flirty too, which is always a good thing, until he turns into a complete knob that is...
I'll stop now, and get back to the film... One Good Deed is predictable, very very predictable at that. You can pretty much see and guess how this film is going, from when the handsome stranger breaks out of prison and knocks on the door. To when he is let in and starts killing, and tracking them down. You see it all coming, it's not an original story at all, apart from the end, there is a little teeny twist in it, that is actually kind of good. I won't ruin it, but it is actually quite clever, unlike some of the people in this film... I mean, c'mon, the policeman knew something was wrong, why did he not call anyone straight away?! And when Idris Elba had the gun, and she was out the car with the kids in the car, why didn't she jump in the car and escape?! All these questions... Just silly characters who have never seen horror films, really.
One Good Deed is an okay film, nothing special but it's fairly entertaining, like you'll watch it but sometimes not really take in what is going on, but you'll look back, and realise you haven't really missed much. If you want something to watch that you don't really have to pay attention to, try One Good Deed, even if it is just to perve at Idris Elba...
I love a good kind of cat and mouse film, and from the movie trailer, this film looked like it was kind of nailing it - for a teen horror movie type of film. 'An evening of drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for a pair of teenagers when a mysterious stranger turns their own game against them...with deadly consequences.' Don't Hang Up is not a terrible movie at all, it's just not very original in a way.
It's quite a weird film in a way, in the sense of how you feel towards the characters, you don't warm to them at all. They are a group of teenagers who find entertainment in pranking people, and not just pranking in the way of putting cling film over the toilet seat... In the way of ringing someone and telling them there is someone in their house and their family has been taken. Pretty damn mean. Not only that, but they do that all and film it, putting it on the internet for all to see too. So, yes, these people aren't the most warming of people, least be fair.
From the start you are not a fan of the characters, as I said earlier, so when bad things start to happen, the bad part of you is kind of loving it. Until, obviously, people start to die, before then you were all over the idea of them being pranked and scared. It's one of those films that follows a simple story and one of those that you know - the whole 'teens have one before being tracked down because they did something bad' thing. It has its good moments too, moments that make you stop and watch, the story isn't that original but I would watch it again. I love cat and mouse movies, where people are played against each other, secrets come out, all that, and this film has plenty of those.
One thing I did notice about this film, the two main actors. Now, I grew up on Disney Channel, I was a massive fan that channel. The sad thing is, it was only a few years ago, when they stopped showing what I liked, that I stopped watching either of them. One programme I used to love and watch weekly, like most, was Wizards of Waverly Place, where, Gregg Sulkin used to play Alex's boyfriend. Gregg Sulkin being one of the main characters in this.
One of my all time favourite Disney original movies too is Teen Beach Movie, it sounds bad, but damn, those songs are catchy as hell. I adore this movie in a weird little, but guess who stars in it, Garrett Clayton, one of the main guys in this... So this made the movie and the fact they were quite nasty in this a bit weird, but it for one did not take anything away from the film. If anything, it made you realise that actually, they are good actors - poor Disney actors.
Don't Hang Up is not a bad film at all, it's entertaining, it's a simple story line and you can watch it easily. It's not going to win any awards, or probably go up in your top ten horror movies, but you won't regret watching it really. You won't feel like you have wasted an hour and a half and won't get it back. It might take your fancy, give it a go if you want.
This is like a lesser known Scary Movie, but actually, it has some charm to it, and I enjoyed it. 'It's Halloween night, and slacker video clerk Stan Helsing along with his insanely sexy ex-girlfriend , best buddy and an exotic dancer/'massage therapist' - detours into a town cursed by the biggest monsters in movie history: Freddy, Jason , Pinhead , Leatherface , Chucky , & Michael Myers.'
This was one of those 'late night' films when I am on my own and tend to turn my brain off, and it worked as one in some ways. I didn't have to concentrate on the film, it's a simple story, nothing difficult to keep up with, and it does have some nice moments. Some little nods here and there to the horro genre, which, to a horror buff, really warms my heart.
It worked in someways as a late night movie, because I didn't have to concentrate on it, but, it didn't work as one because I didn't get to bed until late watching it. I got super into it. It's a bad film, like you would expect, like Scary Movie is, but it's charming and nice. Like Scary Movie is.
Stan Helsing does have a fair few similarities to Scary Movie - don't get me wrong, I like both, both are a breath of fresh air from lifes seriousness, but neither will ever win any awards. Doesn't make either a bad film though. Unless you ask my dad, he caught some of Stan Helsing, laughed and said it was a terrible movie - the key part here though, he laughed. It might have been Leslie Nielson in a dress, but still, he laughed.
Stan Helsing is a lovely nod to horror films, classic ones at that, being that all the villians are classic horror movie villians, just more camped up. And by camped up, they do do a sing off against Stan where YMCA is the chosen song for them...
If this doesn't make you want to watch this, I have no idea what will. It's charming, it has good characters, it's harmless and it's just fun to watch. And Stan is hot and Kenan from Kenan and Kel is in it... just as added extras.
Watching horror films since like 2003, when I could stand dead bodies..
