BEWARE THE MOON REVIEWS
Now before you get too excited, I haven't had the exciting opportunity to go and watch the new Escape Room before it even hits the cinemas here in February. Turns out, there is another film about an escape room and people trying to escape, that is also called Escape Room, that came out last week on Netflix... "Four best friends test their intelligence when an escape room they participate in takes a dark and twisted turn."
I liked this, I really like cat and mouse films and films like this are pretty much that down to a Tee. I loved the idea of the film, the way that it makes something that is looked on as a fun little thing, into something quite deadly. And really, when you think about it, escape rooms are deadly. You're playing money to get locked in a room, and try and work out puzzles - really, you're sitting ducks. Not to put a downer on something that most people are a huge fan of though - no one really wants to murder anyone like this in an escape room! Too much hard work I would say...
I liked the story of this film, but it was quite simply done. The characters are very very simple, like stereotypical characters - two are horny, one is the leader, of course you get the damsel in distress, along with the smart one and the goth and all sorts. All pretty much set out as characters you expect to see. The horny ones even go one step further and try and have sex in every room they can get their hands on - even when people are watching and they know it and not in a kinky sort of way - in a friends trying to see clues in the room through the window and the horny ones are in said room. The order of deaths kind of follow the order of characters too, and what I mean by that, is the leader doesn't die first, but the horny ones don't last - pun fully intended. I'll say that as a clue but without giving any spoilers of the rest of the film away.
I didn't hate Escape room as a wh0le, I actually quite liked the film to be fair - up until the ending. That ending, oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boyyyyyyy. Up until the ending, both me and dad were enjoying this film, both said it wasn't the best, but it was still an enjoyable film to sit through. The ending lost it any hope of becoming a classic in our household...
Obviously, being that I like my reviews to be spoiler free, I will not say what happens in the ending, what I will do though, is tip toe around the spoiler parts, or try to anyway. I will just say that the ending felt like someone wanted to make it a cliff hanger, maybe room for a sequel, but didn't really know what cliff hanger to use or even how to do a good one. What you're left with in the end is just an ending that finishes, it just goes black and both me and dad said damn, what was that. Both had ideas in our head of how the ending may have gone, even the most obvious ones, but none were used, sadly. Any would have been better than the ending used I feel. Probably still wasn't as bad as the ending of the remake of The War of The Worlds though... Great film, awful ending.
I shall end this on a high though, all about the shit sandwich, the rest of the film was entertaining and I don't feel you'd regret watching it. Woo!
Watching horror films since like 2003, when I could stand dead bodies..
