Every time, every single time, I think of this film, I get that Happy Birthday song in my head, but changing Birthday for Death Day.  And not the normal Birthday tune, the song sang by Altered Images...  "A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity."

I feel I say this a lot, that I have been meaning to watch a movie for ages, and it's true for most.  As soon as I heard about this film, I was interested, sounded right like a horror Groundhog Day, and who wouldn't love that?!
I have to admit though, I didn't warm to the film straight away, and I definitely didn't warm to the main character, Tree, either.  Yes, Tree, as in those things that stand in forests and gardens.  I literally spent the first half asking myself "Did he say Tree?", "Is her name Tree?".  But in fact, yes, they said Tree.  Someone named their child after a tree, I like trees but not enough to name a child after them...  Tree is a wee bit of a bitch, a wee bit of a big bitch and she is not that likable at all.  As I mentioned, you do not warm to her at all.  Great start!

Happy Death Day, even though I didn't warm to it to start with, I liked the concept from the start. It really reminded me of a mixture of Groundhog Day and the Supernatural episode, Mystery Spot, maybe more so Supernatural, but can't be leaving Bill Murray out - it's a great idea!  And it was a great idea, it was played off very well, each day she lives through, you see and each death is different and is all played out in different ways.  You know the deaths are coming, but just not how they come.  Each death is different but with the same masked evil character - so mysterious, and so much death!

I warmed to it by the end of it, up until about the middle, I wasn't that blown away - don't get me wrong, it's not the best film I've seen, but it has a charm to it.  I found myself warming to the film as I warmed to Tree, whether it was because I started caring more for her and who was killing her, I'm not sure.  Either way, by the end of it I was invested, and I wanted to know who the killer was, so badly.
One thing I do when I watch a movie, is I don't try and work out the twist, I like to be surprised, and I didn't try and work it out in this film so I really did not see it coming.  It wasn't a bad twist at all, some might see it coming as it's not most difficult thing to work out, but it's definitely better than the alternative ending, as I watched that and that was not the best...
Overall, Happy Death Day is not a bad film at all, it's fun and entertaining, and passes the time.  It might not be a classic but it's got a great concept and it just good to watch with your brain off - unless you want to try and work out the twist.
