BEWARE THE MOON REVIEWS
![]() I watched Piercing as I did not know what I fancied, horror wise, and this was short and I was intrigued, very very intrigued. "A man kisses his wife and baby goodbye and seemingly heads away on business, with a plan to check into a hotel, call an escort service, and kill an unsuspecting prostitute." See, the storyline does sound very intriguing... Piercing did not go the way I was expecting, at all, and it kind of put me off it, if I have to be honest. It starts out very well, it has old, around the 70s style, adverts and production footage, such as Tarantino likes, at the beginning - which I love. Takes me right back to how good the intermission scenes and adverts are during Grindhouse. Even the movie posters use that same theme, damn, I really wanted to like this film! It then opens to Reed and his wife, pretty much normal, apart from he is really into the idea of booking a prostitute, pretending he is on a business trip, and killing her. He has it all planned out too, all written down - which, to be fair, does not seem like the smartest idea, good old written down evidence and all.... ![]() One of my favourites parts of this film, and there aren't that many as I started not really liking this film at parts, but one of my favourites is right at the beginning. Reed basically mimes out the whole murder, as if the poor girl is there. You see him grab her by her invisible hair, and slit her invisible throat, and even with added sound effects, such as thuds. It's so well done and something I had never really seen before. I really liked it. I also really liked the soundtrack to it, probably one of the best movie soundtracks to be fair. Seems like it shouldn't have fitted, but it really really did. Notice the shit sandwich I am creating here? I liked this film...at the start, but then I lost it half way through it, and I feel it just took a turn that I didn't really want. I liked all the twists in it, and there are a fair few, but the ending just did not do it for me. This is obviously my opinion, due to the fact this has won film festival awards, but I just wanted more, and for me, I just felt it didn't go anywhere. I just was left staring at the screen, wishing it had been more OOMPH. If that even is a thing. On a plus note though, I did highly like the special effects, nice and natural and not over the top, which suited it.
Other than those, I really did not like Piercing. It was very original, but just didn't have enough for me to really enjoy it. I won't say why, as I don't want to give the ending away, but I just expected more.
