Get Out

I have finally done it, I have seen the horror/thriller film, (depending who you ask), of the year! The only horror film to ever get 100%, (at one point, damn you one bad reviewer!), on Rotten Tomatoes, I finally did it and sat and watched it.  And I was impressed and can definitely see why it got 100%. It's an impressive, clever film. 'A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend's mysterious family estate.'

Get Out, you were right to get all the hype you got, and are still getting, you are a clever little number.  Get Out starts the same way any other films does really, something bad happens at the start, leading the story and teasing you, before flashing to the main characters having a wonderful time.  You see a young man getting pushed into a boot of a car and then we jump to the main character, getting ready for an, if you would call it that, exciting weekend meeting his future in-laws.
Even before they arrive, things are weird, the police officer is not the nicest to Chris and then when they arrive, Rose's parents are a bit too 'Little House on the Prairie' nice when they arrive. They are pretty damn keen, let's just say that.  But my favourite thing, it gets weirder...

Get Out is a good film with making you feel uneasy, I had heard a lot of good things about this film, and I had heard it was kinda messed up - so you know the storm is coming. Rose has a weird brother, the parents seem keen, but safe, as in the brother tries to put Chris in a headlock.. The parents do not. What the parents do do, is throw parties, where white people chat and ask the few black people there weird questions. Might as well have just asked out right "what's it like being black then?".  Turns out though, these questions do add up to the ending, in a very clever and sinister way... Get Out is very good at being subtle, very very good in fact... But I am afraid, if any of you lovely people haven't seen Get Out, I will say this; this is a brilliant film, a classic, a banger. I felt the ending was missing something, like it could have been more shocking and more unexpected, as me and dad had kind of guessed it, but it didn't ruin anything. Get Out is a brilliant, clever film that deserved all the five stars and reviews it got, go see it. And if you haven't seen it, STOP READING NOW, AND PLEASE COME BACK WHEN YOU HAVE. Lots of spoilers to follow...

Right, so I trust anyone who is still reading has seen it... I am now going to go into all the spoilers, literally, spoilers everywhere, left right and centre.  I was watching this with my dad, and we were both super into it, but we did kind of say, "think the twist is that they are hypnotizing the black people in it?". We pretty much guessed some of the twist as soon as the mum tried all her voodoo stuff on Chris. Well, I thought it was the twist, or at least one, friends of mine though, thought that Rose being involved was the main twist. That was a twist I did not see coming.
Going back to what I thought was the twist, I felt it was missing something, like the whole thing that the person is still in the body, but in a sunken state, was very clever, but I saw part of it coming, so I wasn't really shocked.  When Get Out ended, both me and dad felt something was missing, and it was to do with that I feel, that you could see the fact people were under some sort of power.  We kind of wished there was more to it than just that they were under. I did like the twist, that the person was still in there, I just wanted something more that I didn't see slightly coming.

Picture
What I didn't see coming was Rose being involved, really, thinking about it, it should have been obvious, having someone close to the person involved involved, if that makes sense, is always a good plan. Chris trusted Rose so who else to hurt him than her, the person he feels is on her side, bravo. I didn't see it coming.
Jordan Peele did an amazing job here, my friend said if you watch it back, you see all the hints and all the nudges added in there, which I love any film to do. Get Out is just a clver film, that does have some hard hitting points to it - the ending especially with Rod arriving in his flashing car when Chris is leaning over a half dead body... Good nod there to the nastiness and wrong side of today's world.
I'm not going to get deep and this review is getting very long, so I shall just say, this is a brilliant film, I felt the ending was missing a little something, it didn't take from the film, but it could have had more of a punch, that's all, and it has too many good and creepy points to fit, like the bingo sense... Brilliant film though, brilliant. Bravo.
