Hereditary

Everyone can breath a sigh one relief for three reasons: 1, I watched the "scariest movie of the year", and 2, I watched it with mum and dad and 3, they actually had some strong feelings about the film!  Even I am excited for this review and I know what's coming, pretty much...
"After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets."

I went into this with an open mind, I had heard it was the scariest film of this year and the scariest film some had ever seen - scientifically proven too, apparently.  I didn't believe this.  I feel believing hype about something can ruin it, so I try not to go in expecting anything, and besides, I watch a lot of horror films, it's very hard to scare me.  I don't expect to be scared from a film, I don't watch horrors to be scared, I just enjoy them and I have since I was into them.  I went into Hereditary not expecting anything, and I am glad I did...
Hereditary is not a terrifying movie in anyway, it has creepy moments, and it uses them more than cheap jump scares, but I will definitely be able to sleep without being too scared from this.  Mum and dad agreed too, dad said he feels I have made them watch scarier movies then this, and mum didn't like this at all.  She got nervous throughout it, but after it said how crap it was.  I for one think they are being a bit harsh, I liked it, I liked it a fair bit actually.
Hereditary is a very tricky movie to sum up, I watched it last night, and most of today I have spent Googling the shit out of it and also Youtube is great as I didn't fully understand then ending.  None of us in my house was sure on the ending, and that was one of the reasons my dad wasn't a fan, he didn't like it as it wasn't all clear and you had to Google it to get it.  (Some might not have, as we had an idea of the ending, but weren't 100%.).

Unlike my dad, I actually don't mind having to look into a film, I have looked into this a lot and watched a fair few videos in it, mainly the ending, and actually, I like it more after doing it.  From looking at the ending I have actually learnt about build up to it too, and all the little easter eggs that have been missed - it actually makes me want to go back and watch it again.  I would say that shows that it is not as scary as people said, but that it is actually a good film, and it is.  It's very original and very well put together.
One thing I did like about Hereditary was that you had no idea at where it was going, none of us watching saw half of what happened coming.  It doesn't really follow any rules, nor does it set anything up like most horror films, camera angles aren't set so you can see what's coming.  And I also read that the trailer was made to be misleading, but in a good way, in the way that you wouldn't see anything coming, especially the ending.  Kind of like Fight Club, and it made for an interesting film, a different and original horror movie for one.

Now, back to the whole point of why everyone is seeing this film, because it is meant to be the scariest film of the year.  I disagree, I have no idea what the scariest film of the year is, I would probably say that Ghost Stories creeped me out more, but still, nothing really tends to scare me, even Hereditary.  I didn't find it scary but it is pretty creepy, the music is some of the creepiest stuff I have ever heard to be fair, and some scenes will stay with you...  This is a spoiler free review so I shall not be saying anything to ruin it for anyone, all I will say is that there are certain scenes and incidents that will come out of nowhere, punch you in the face and then stay with you for at least a few days after.  Especially *THAT* scene.
I have to say though, as much as I liked it, I did feel a little let down with the ending, it kind of changed from what had been happening, and took it down another path and one that I find less scary in a way.  Damn, this is hard not saying anything about it!  Just go and see it!
Hereditary is a very well done film, me and my parents didn't find it scary, but I thought it had some stand out, shocking moments and is a well done film, one that I shall be watching again due to researching it.  Turns out hype doesn't make every film bad...
